The Denver and Rio Grande Railroad purchased the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1988 and merged the two roads to create Southern Pacific lines. D&RGW car 12663 emerged from Southern Pacific's Pine Bluff Arkansas shop repainted with D&RGW reporting marks and SP speed lettering in November of 1995. Car 12663 is the only quad hopper to receive this paint scheme.
